GM Recalls 619,122 Older Pontiac G5 and Chevrolet Cobalt Models due to Ignition Switch Defect

GM will recall 619,122 vehicles due to an ignition switch defect.  The vehicles affected by this recall are the 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt and 2007 Pontiac G5 vehicles.  The issue is that the ignition switch torque performance is not up to specification.  A heavy key ring or a “jarring event” such as hitting a pothole or being involved in a run off the road incident could cause the ignition to shut off.  If the ignition is shut off, this may prevent the air bags from deploying in a crash.  In addition to the vehicles being recalled in the United States, another 153,000 in Canada and 6,100 in Mexico are being recalled.

It has been reported that at least six people have died because of accidents involving faulty ignition switches that involved run off the road accidents.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge.  The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule.  Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020 or Pontiac at 1-800-762-2737.  GM’s number for this recall is 13454.
