Troubles Mounting For Johnson & Johnson

| Mar 26, 2013 | DePuy Hip Replacement, Drug and Medical Device Litigation

Fresh on the heels of a $8.3 million dollar verdict finding its DePuy hip was defective, (Kransky v. DePuy, BC456086, California Superior Court, Los Angeles County), Johnson & Johnson’s is recalling its OneTouch VerioIQ glucose meter, because, according to the Associated Press on March 25, 2013, “they do not provide a warning when a diabetic’s blood sugar level is dangerously high.”

The recall is J&J’s latest in a string of about three dozen since 2009 ranging from nonprescription medicines such as adult and children’s Tylenol and Motrin to the DePuy metal on metal hips. According to the article, “The recalls and lost product sales have cost J&J well over $1 billion.”

Johnson and Johnson is facing in excess of 10,000 DePuy cases throughout the US, including one case currently in trial in Illinois. Thousands of hip implant recipients have experienced pain, dislocation, fracture, toxic poisoning, and were forced to have revision surgery to remove the defective De Puy ASR. It has long been recognized that all metal implants–and metal-on-metal bearings in particular–corrode and cause a release of metal ions (particles). Because cobalt and chromium have been shown to be carcinogenic and mutagenic in human and animal models, systemic toxicity and cancer risk are considered to be possible disadvantages of the metal-on-metal articulation. These wear patterns were well-known long before DePuy sold its ASR
